Browse Impressions: Studies in the Art, Culture, and Future of Books
Series editor: Matthew P. Brown, University of Iowa
In our moment of media shift, both book history and the book arts are especially well-poised to investigate text-making, to understand its past, comprehend its present, and navigate its future. Akin to the digital tools of today, the book as a technology, across the millennia, has transformed how we create and know. Impressions thus seeks titles surveying creativity and knowledge formation through the expressive media of books. The series invites works that attend to the changing meanings of authorship, publication, and reading and that explain the shifting valences of print, image, speech, script, and screen. We call for writing that critically eyes the cultural contexts and trade economies shaping book practice. Indeed, practice itself is our focal point: the sentences of history have always been animated by the verb tense of design, the active ways in which a maker's choices remake culture. The makers in our titles include artists and craftspeople as well as writers, editors, designers, publishers, agents, archivists, performers, librarians, and readers. A joint project of the UI Press and the UI Center for the Book, the series showcases the dynamism and resilience of the book format.
